I just checked my bank balance, and as usual it’s a mix of bad news/good news. Bad news - payday was Friday and I’m essentially out of money after paying down numerous bills. The good news? In 3 months the car will be paid off. Two more full payments and then a partial payment and it’s all mine.
Other than various bits of damage from idiots hitting the car there is nothing wrong with it. I was putting on 15K/year for a few years, but since changing jobs the miles have dropped considerably; I just turned 50K a few weeks ago, so when it’s paid off I will have averaged a tad over 10K/year. With so few miles driven lately the fuel economy hasn’t been all that great, averaging just over 20MPG. With a rev-happy engine and a manual transmission I tend to zing it up to redline more than I should. And I’m sure the mileage would improve if I took several hundred pounds of crap our of it (mostly water and audio gear)
(Not the same but very similar in concept...)
No need for another car. I might buy an old Miata as a project, but no rush. Time for a new computer (last major computer purchase was in 2009, and Microsoft won’t be helping me purchase another Macintosh again), and then save, save, save.

Good on you. Fiscal sense is lacking these days. I got.mad at the salesman who tried to tell me that an extra 100$/mo is “practically nothing”...
I said it before so apologies if you saw it but I got wind of Ford’s 4500$ rebate on focus STs. Since I’d like one and there are plenty on dealer lots I figured I’d check it out since I only owe a few grand left on my fiesta and 4500$ is an awfully nice incentive to move. But it turns out most dealers are not stacking this rebate with their own discounts. Instead,.I’m told that I should just accept that it will be a higher payment and I should buy it because who wants to be in a 3 year old car?!?!?
Cretins. The lot of them.

Woohoo! Paying off that note is a fantastic feeling!

Games, games, games - this was my first new car purchase, and although the dealer was nice enough, I don’t want to go through the buying process again unless it’s on my terms, like this last purchase. No rebates, no special financing, none of that crap. Give me a fair price, like the 20% I got off of this Mazda, and I’ll take care of my own financing like I did through my credit union.
Maybe I’m overly skeptical, but I don’t really trust dealers to get me the best deal when all they seem to think about is monthly payment. There just seems to be too many places where things can be hidden in such arrangements, and I really don’t feel like spending the time to figure out what they’re trying to sneak in and where. I guess I’m just taking after my dad, a man who was never afraid of walking away from the negotiating table, the only difference being that he would pay for his cars without financing, even if it was a $50K MB. It must be nice to have that kind of leverage...

Yeah. It’s a tough deal to buy a car which seems.so antithecal of the idea of a free market. Any other industry competes.for.my.business. I told one sales person they literally snatched defeat from the jaws of.victory by constantly changing other numbers on the sheet to make the number I asked for look like I wanted. They seriously took away discounts to up the value of my trade for me.and only.slightly reduce the total sale price.

It’s one of the best feelings in the world, having paid off a car loan. I’m sitting on two ATM (mine and my wife’s) and I’m just itching to get one paid off and then accelerate the other; though we have about a year before we can pay off the first.
In hindsight, I won’t do the two car payment thing again, we can afford it but just not worth the added stress of having both. In fact, having access to cheaper financing via a line of credit through our credit union, I likely won’t ever buy brand new again.
